The story begins with a lie, or, to be more exact, a fantasy. Carole loves Edward. She believes he would one day divorce his wife and marry her. One day, a lady moves into the neighbourhood. She is Mandy. Carole feels inferior to find Mandy is independent and pays her own rent and living. Mandy also has a sophisticated, impeccable taste. Carole adores her. As time goes by, Carole and Mandy become close friends. One evening, Carole joins Mandy and her friend Charles for dinner. In the restaurant, she meets Edgar. Carole enjoys being with Edgar. She finds in him something special which does not exist with Edward. She thinks she is in love with Edgar. Edward is not going to lose without a fight.
