The Chef and the Daruma

Chef Tojo’s invention of the California Roll introduced sushi to the West, but the journey there was difficult. When Tojo arrived in 1970's Vancouver, sushi - and those who make and eat it - was seen as foreign and bizarre. How much did Tojo change to fit in? The film follows his hardships, his evolution, his ongoing search for identity. It also parallels the Japanese fable of Daruma, symbolizing resilience and perseverance. Just as Daruma dolls represent the struggle to rise again after failure, Tojo’s story embodies the theme of overcoming adversity and standing tall in the face of challenges.
